My name is Sue Black, I’m a Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University and leading on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the TransFIRe project.

TransFIRe is all about transforming the Foundation Industries: metal, ceramics, paper, cement, glass and chemicals, working across these industries to address the challenges brought about by climate change and the need for long term sustainability.

I’m delighted to have a great team working with me:

  • Jo Stansfield – Senior Project Manager
  • Ciel Bishop – Project Manager
  • Mike Thakoordin – PDRA

That’s me on the left and Jo on the right in the pic below on one of our visits, this one to Hanson Ketton cement works. Ciel and Mike have joined the team since then, there will be pics of all us on a visit soon.

Even though we have only just started working together we are all really excited about making a real difference in the Foundation Industries – and beyond – in terms of EDI.

We are currently working hard on our strategy and on getting a good understanding as a team of the EDI challenges and issues. We have started putting together a landscape mapping of EDI initiatives across the Foundation Industries to see what exists already, where we can connect pre-existing groups and/or initiatives, and where there are gaps that we could consider filling. This is ongoing work, as there are so many initiatives, that we will share publicly once we think we have a reasonable coverage of the landscape. We have taken part in and run several events this year which we will post about here on our blog in the coming weeks and months.

If you are interested in and/or would like to be involved in any way with our work please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
