DESCRIPTION:International Synergies and TransFIRe are pleased to extend to you an invitation to our second cross sector\, resource matching workshop which will be delivered as part of the TransFIRe project. \nRegister for the event here\nWorkshop Summary \nThe aim of this session is to bring together the six foundation industries\, with representation from their respective supply chains and other sectors which could supply solutions\, to identify opportunities for industrial symbiosis. The focal point of our workshop will be the use of a simple\, internationally proven resource matching methodology that seeks to identify new business opportunities for participants’ waste resources. The session is interactive and will require a modest of amount of preparation from all delegates ahead of the event. The output will be a significant number of industrial symbiosis synergies\, some quick wins and others longer term innovation opportunities. All will have the potential to reduce cost\, cut carbon emissions and reduce waste disposal volumes. \nYou will be contacted in the week prior to the workshop regarding what information to bring with you on your own resource HAVES and WANTS. This is a key component of the matching process which is undertaken on the day and involves minimal preparation. \n• HAVES are resources that your company produce and wish to find a higher value market opportunity for\, these could be resources such process wastes\, by products\, energy and heat\, water\, logistics or processing capacity. \n• WANTS are resources that your company could potentially use as process inputs and represent an opportunity for a more cost effective and sustainable source of raw material\, water\, energy or logistics. \n  \nThe primary aim of the workshop session will be to identify opportunities to match these HAVES and WANTS together\, to create win-win synergies between organisations in the room and potentially further afield. DESCRIPTION:SKAPE is delighted to host Kyle Parker and Steve Yearley (University of Edinburgh). \nKyle and Steve will be presenting on “Net-Zero\, Industrial Decarbonisation\, and the ‘Non-Technical’ Dimensions of Transformative Change”. \nAbstract: \nThis talk reports on research being conducted within STIS as part of the UK’s TransFIRe Hub – a large investment by UKRI/EPSRC involving over 20 investigators from 12 UK institutions\, in addition to Project Partners from more than 70 organisations (including companies\, NGOs and government organisations.  \nTransFIRe is about the meeting point of two huge challenges and transformations confronting UK industry: namely\, the impacts of Brexit on international competitiveness\, and the drive towards decarbonisation and the UK’s 2050 ‘Net-Zero’ target.  This is of particular importance to the so-called Foundation Industries (FI) – the energy-intensive industries that produce the material from which other products are made (for example\, metals\, glass and ceramics). Ordinary people are seldom customers for foundation-industry products\, but they (we) buy the things made from FI outputs.  \nIn this talk we will draw on policy analyses and one main Scottish\, industry case study to investigate how the future of the Foundation Industries is being shaped and imagined or ignored in the UK. Most of the research that is currently being conducted on FIs is focused on technical adaptations and improvements. Our emphasis is on other factors\, including the planning system\, political objectives\, and community-industry relations. Though this research is focused on the UK\, the talk has implications for comparable OECD member states.  \nSpeakers: \nKyle Parker: After working as an academic research chemist for 10 years\, in 2018 I came to the University of Edinburgh to study policy support for accelerating technology development in Scotland’s marine renewable energy sector.  From 2020-2022 I worked as a Research Fellow on the ‘Energy Policy Effectiveness’ project for the ClimateXChange research agency\, where I produced systematic evidence reviews on energy and climate change policy issues on behalf of the Scottish Government.  This work focused primarily on green industrial strategy\, and accelerating the deployment of low carbon heating and energy efficiency technologies in Scotland.   \nI currently work as a Research Fellow on the TransFIRe (Transforming the Foundation Industries Research Hub) project\, studying the socioeconomic dimensions of transformative change and industrial decarbonisation.   \nSteve Yearley holds the Chair in the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge (SSK) in STIS\, the subject area of “Science\, Technology and Innovation Studies”.  \nSteve is well known for his work in social studies of science and in environmental sociology. Key to his work is thinking about environmental issues from an STS or SSK point of view – for example\, looking at the ways in which environmental activists have adapted to dealing with scientific evidence.  \nIn his empirical work Steve is particularly concerned with areas where STS and environmental sociology overlap: for example in environmental controversies with a pronounced scientific element (such as with climate change and with continuing disputes over the safety or otherwise of GMOs and the associated concerns around synthetic biology) or\, for example\, in attempts to foster public engagement in technical decision-making in environmental areas (for instance\, through his work on citizen engagement in urban air-quality issues). Currently\, Steve is working on industrial decarbonisation in the UK\, and also doing some writing that links back to his work at the Genomics Forum.  \n______________ \nThis event will take place in person at the University of Edinburgh\, Chrystal Macmillan Building\, Room 2.15.

SUMMARY:Industrial Symbiosis Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Summary \nThe aim of this session is to bring together the six foundation industries\, with representation from their respective supply chains\, to identify opportunities for industrial symbiosis. The focal point of our workshop will be the use of a simple\, internationally proven resource matching methodology that seeks to identify new business opportunities for participants’ waste resources. The session would be interactive and will require a modest amount of preparation from all delegates ahead of the event. The output will be a significant number of industrial symbiosis synergies\, some quick wins and others longer term innovation opportunities. All will have the potential to reduce cost\, cut carbon emissions and reduce waste disposal. \nYou will be contacted prior to the workshop to provide information on your own resource HAVES and WANTS. This is a key component of the matching process which is undertaken on the day. \n• HAVES are resources that your company produce and wish to find a higher value market opportunity for\, these could be resources such process wastes\, by products\, energy and heat\, water\, logistics or processing capacity. \n• WANTS are resources that your company could potentially use as process inputs and represent an opportunity for a more cost effective and sustainable source of raw material\, water\, energy or logistics. \nFor ease\, this information can be provided using data already being collected as part of the TransFIRe project but will need your express permission for its use as part of the matching activity. If this is not desirable\, then one of the TransFIRe team will contact you to arrange to talk through your own resource data input. \nWorkshop Agenda \nThe agenda for the resource matching workshop is: \n13.30 Welcome and Introductions \n13.45 Introduction to TransFIRe and the Resource Matching Workshop \n13.55 Interactive Resource Matching Session \n15.20 Workshop Summary and Close \nWorkshop Follow Up \nWithin a week of the event’s conclusion\, you will receive your own bespoke company report identifying those potential resource matches that were created on the day\, as well any additional opportunities that have been identified from our supporting data analysis. \nOur intention is to hold a follow up workshop on the 19th of July\, for which you will receive a separate invite. Here we will present the outcomes of the resource matching session and engage in a discussion on how together we can successfully advance the identified synergies. \n

SUMMARY:Transportation Requirements to Move to Net Zero 2050
DESCRIPTION:We held a series of road mapping workshops to produce a circular economy transport roadmap. The CENTS team will use this roadmap to outline transportation requirements needed to move to Net Zero 2050. Everyone will also work together during the workshop to address various topics such as shared transport and how to bend the linear economy circular.
